I have found that while the internet has a plethora of free patterns available, the free ones sometimes don't work like they say they're supposed to. My go-to is a good book, full of great patterns and tips.
A great book with 20 different styles of granny squares - add a whole bunch together, and you've got a perfect throw blanket!
