I have been collecting Christmas books for the past three years and I have gotten enough for both boys to be able to open one book per day in the whole month of December so we enjoy having a new Christmas book each day to be able to read and then of course as the days go on we have more books to read for our Christmas pile. Our definition of diversity might be a little broader than others--in our house we focus on learning about people who don't look like us (race, physical differences, such as disability,) people who don't live like us (socioeconomic differences), people who don't work like us (overnight jobs), and diverse historical figures (A is for Awesome), and breaking gender stereotypes. This list is geared more towards the under 5 crowd. I hope other parents might find it a good starting point to think about diversity in your home too!

I read one book that roped in some very hard topics and I haven’t stepped outside of that genre since. I love books that are about hard topics like substance abuse, trauma, and hardship. These books are sure to make you cry at least once. Some of them are very hard to read, I had to put a few down and take a break and come back later. But once I finished, I was so happy I picked them up again.

I started off my journey as a reader in middle school when my dad bought me a boxed set of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern for Christmas. I soon branched out to sci-fi. Assimov, Arthur C. Clarke, so many Star Trek novels (Yes, I'm a Trekkie.), and other authors no one has probably heard of. I love the more intellectual sci-fi like Contact over the wierd stuff like Dune.
